A military judge has ruled that Pendleton 8 member Lance Cpl Jerry Shumate , age 21, is a flight risk and should be not released from confinement while awaiting trial. Shumate is one of seven Marines charged in the April 26 death of Iraqi villager Hashim Ibrahim Awad.
Shumate's mother, Diann, told Lt. Col. Jeffrey Meeks that "Jerry wouldn't go nowhere because his family is here," describing them as a working-class family struggling to make ends meet.
The Shumate family lives in Matlock, Washington where Lance Cpl Shumate once starred as a quarterback on the small town high school football team.
Shumate's father, a guest on my radio show two weeks ago, said he is a supporter of America's war in Iraq and is proud that is son was "fighting the enemy over there, so that we do not have to fight them over here".
I know this is really boring and you are skipping to the next comment, but I just wanted to throw you a big thanks - you cleared up some things for me!
