…With the dems taking control of the house, and the senate teetering that direction pending Virginia…California poses some interesting after thoughts…
….The Republicans actually faired quite well in The Golden State despite the national trend. The Governator won in a landslide, as did San Diego County Republicans Duncan Hunter and Darrell Issa. Brian Bilbray- whose easy victory I forecasted yesterday despite tight polling numbers- defeated his opponent by the largest margin of victory of his political career.
Interestingly, Bilbray never swayed from his message of his support of the war in Iraq, while his opponent made the war her #1 campaign issue. The results were just the opposite of what occurred nationally.
Keep a watchful eye on potential presidential candidate Duncan Hunter. Not well known outside of San Diego or Washington he runs to the right of John McCain on key issues- pro life- that play well to voters in early primary states (ie: Iowa, South Carolina). Hunter is a Viet Nam vet and the former chairman of the House Armed Services Committee.
Finally…not only is Nancy Pelosi the first woman in U.S. history to hold the post of Speaker of the House, she is also the first Italian-American to do so.
